PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are involved in product development of Long Term products including Reinsurers, Actuarial Students, Product Developers, Senior Claims Assessors and Senior Underwriters.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and researching a trend in disease management.
  • Analysing trends in research information.
  • Suggesting an approach to assess the risk associated with a selected disease.
  • Presenting research findings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 4. It is assumed that learners are competent in the Unit Standards in the FETC: Long Term Risk Assessment.

    Identify and research a trend in disease management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A disease is identified for research based on market information or claims experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information on an identified disease is gathered and collated from Medical Practitioners, Reinsurers and the media. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of new technology on the management of the disease is researched with reference to the prognosis of the mortality and the morbidity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse trends in researched information.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information is analysed and compared to current underwriting standards or philosophy in order to make an underwriting recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The potential impact of the disease on selected products is analysed in order to make an underwriting recommendation.

    Suggest an approach to assess the risk associated with a selected disease.

    An underwriting philosophy or approach is suggested based on analysed trends.

    The implications of the proposed philosophy on an insurer's internal practice is indicated with reference to products and target market.

    A new underwriting practice resulting from research is communicated to other Underwriters in a training session.

    The rationale behind the new practice and technical aspects of the research are clarified in response to questions.
