PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who work specialise in heavy motor vehicle claims.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Initiating a heavy motor vehicle claim.
  • Interpreting an assessors report.
  • Applying knowledge of the regulations attached to the Road Traffic Act to the roadworthiness of a vehicle.
  • Applying a policy wording to authorise a claim.
  • Explaining how fraud occurs in a heavy motor vehicle claim. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is heavy motor vehicle claims:
  • Heavy motor vehicles include, but are not limited to, industrial machinery, earth moving equipment, agricultural machinery, horse and trailer, cranes, contractors' plants, bulldozers, and busses.
  • Evidence includes, but is not limited to, photographs, interviews, police reports and hospital reports.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Initiate a heavy motor vehicle claim.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process to be followed when an incident is reported is explained with specific reference to the appointment of an assessor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cover is determined to authorise emergency action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Instructions for recovery are given according to the type of vehicle. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interpret an assessor's report.

    An event is analysed to determine the relevant information in the assessor's report. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An assessor's report is analysed for sufficiency and additional information is requested where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential liability is assessed to anticipate a Third Party claim or request the assessor to reconstruct an accident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Evidence relating to the event is interpreted and compared to a quote. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The claim's history of the vehicle is investigated to identify the pattern of previous repairs and claims. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply knowledge of the Regulations attached to the Road Traffic Act to the roadworthiness of a vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An assessors report is analysed to determine whether the collision can be attributed to unroadworthiness of the vehicle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information on the ongoing maintenance of a heavy motor vehicle is analysed to infer roadworthiness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The housekeeping on a fleet is assessed to inform the validation of a claim. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The Road Traffic Act and Regulations are used to access information relevant to roadworthiness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Knowledge of the Road Traffic Act is applied to a claim. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply a policy wording to authorise a claim.

    A policy wording and schedule are analysed to determine the terms and conditions.

    Exclusions are explained for a specific insurer.

    Conditions under which a vehicle will be repaired or written off are explained for a specific insurer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A decision is made to authorise or repudiate a heavy motor vehicle claim.

    Explain how fraud occurs in a heavy motor vehicle claim.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Potential fraud relating to vehicle parts is explained and a heavy motor vehicle claim is audited for potential fraud. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Potential fraud relating to the collision is explained and evidence from the collision scene is interpreted to determine probability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Case studies are analysed for potential fraud.
