PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for claims assessors, negotiators and other learners who assess the damage in a fire or accident claim.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analyse documents relating to a claim.
  • Investigating a short term claim.
  • Motivate a decision to settle a claim.
  • Concluding a settlement with a client. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is
  • All non-motor claims including fire or accident claim.
  • Personal domestic, commercial, industrial and corporate claims.

    Analyse documents relating to a claim. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information relating to the client is analysed in order to compile a profile. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The schedule of cover is analysed to establish the cover in terms of the policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A claim's history is analysed for information relevant to the current claim and risk management requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Investigate a short term claim.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information about a loss is gathered in an on site observation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The observed situation is compared to the policy cover and a decision is made as to whether the claim is valid. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Service providers for the specific insurer/underwriter are named with reference to current service level agreements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The loss is quantified with reference to item identification, estimation of damage or loss and the limitations of policy cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The rules of a specific insurer are applied to the claim. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Motivate a decision to settle a claim.

    The quantum of the claim is used to determine the method of settlement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Settlement options are established from the policy wording. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A proposal is made and substantiated for the settlement of the claim.

    Conclude a settlement with a client.

    The outcomes of the assessment are presented to a client.

    Areas of potential conflict are identified in an assessment.

    Documents required by the underwriter are completed and an indication is given of the consequences of accepting the contract of settlement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A written report is compiled for the insurer/underwriter according to organisation requirements.
