PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are entering the field of computer-aided design require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Produce working drawings of the finished design.
  • Produce a bill of material of the correct sizes and quantities.
  • Determine the availability and costing of materials as specified in the bill of materials.
  • Compile and present a final design proposal. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication, Mathematical Literacy and Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard focuses on the design cycle from product conceptualisation to final production, taking current policies on environmental issues into consideration. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Produce a working drawing of the design. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    2D and 3D working drawings are produced using orthographic, isometric, perspective and exploded views. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A working drawing is produced with dimensional and notational information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The different views are represented in the drawings. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Orthographic, isometric, trimetric and cross-sectional views.

    Design, manufacturing or assembly information is presented according to specific requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Produce a bill of material to the correct sizes and quantities.

    A spreadsheet is generated suitable for the bill of materials.

    Determine the availability and costing of materials as specified in the bill of materials.
