PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are entering the filed of general draughting require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.

Qualifying learners can apply the correct codes and standards to draughting. This will include understanding the different types of engineering drawings, the standard welding and machining symbols. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Computer Literacy.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The ranges, as indicated under the specific outcomes, determine the scope and level of this unit standard:
  • The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Work is generally, but not exclusively, carried out in a team environment.
  • Applicable draughting procedures are followed and understood.
  • Characteristics of the different materials are included.
  • Different cutting machines and basic welding techniques are included.
  • Drawings include mechanical and building.

    Identify and describe the different types of engineering drawings.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
