PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to evaluate a refrigeration plant with respect to the water circuit. The competency includes all the actions associated with assessing the performance of the water circuit.

    Prepare to assess the performance of the water circuit of a refrigeration plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Suitable personal protective equipment is examined for functionality and used in accordance with its design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The measuring instruments and their calibrations are examined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission to enter the working place is obtained and the consequences of entering a workplace without obtaining permission are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The site where the assessment is to take place is examined for hazards and risks and any present are dealt with.

    The measuring positions are selected.

    The physical inspection of the refrigeration plant room and equipment, including safety signs, is conducted.

    The measurement of conditions and recording of data is carried out.

    Report, make recommendations and deal with equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Instruments are retrieved, examined and re-calibrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment and instruments are re-examined and conditions that may influence the measurements and accuracy of readings are identified and dealt with accordingly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The instruments are cleaned and stored, and defective instruments are dealt with accordingly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recording and reporting are completed accurately, in the required format, and submitted to relevant designated persons within the required time frame.

    This unit standard was Gazetted on 21 October 2005 with the title 'Determine a refrigeration plant duty with respect to water circuits and recommend appropriate remedial action'. However, it has subsequently been agreed that the title should be 'Use water circuits to determine the performance of a refrigeration plant and take appropriate remedial action'.
