PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standards is for learners in the law enforcement environment who demonstrate tactical and street survival techniques.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply tactical movements when attending to complaints.
  • Secure a scene of hostage and or suicide situations.
  • Use different tactical approaches and techniques.
  • Apply tactical techniques and approaches in clearance of houses.
  • Stopping and searching of suspect vehicles and occupants.
  • Perform an anti-technical movement drill.

    The principles of hiding and cover are demonstrated in a controlled situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nature of the complaint is analysed in terms of the risk and safety to oneself and others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible ambush situations are identified according to the nature of the complaint received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The actions, drills and steps taken in a counter ambush drill are demonstrated in a controlled situation.

    The need to approach a complaint tactically is explained in terms of the risk and safety to oneself and others.

    Tactically approach refers to but not limited to:
  • Drive past the addressed of complaint.

    The need for the development a plan "A" and "B" before approaching the complaint is explained in order to minimize the risk to oneself and others.

    Secure a scene of hostage and or suicide situations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The actions to be taken at a crime scene of hostage and or suicide situation are demonstrated in a given scenario. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The actions to be taken include but are not limited to:
  • Determine whether or not the situation exists.
  • Contain the situation.
  • Inform Community Service Center.
  • Identify possible witnesses.
  • If possible obtain information on number and description of hostages, condition of Hostages, determine if they are armed.

    The different roles of members at a hostage and or suicide situation are explained in order to determine the responsibilities of each member.

    Work as a team member during a house clearance operation to ensure the safety of all members of the team in a controlled scenario.

    Stop and search suspect vehicles and occupants in a controlled situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need for the stopping and searching of a suspicious vehicle is explained in accordance with prescribed legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stopping a suspicious vehicle is demonstrated in a controlled situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Use of cover in the stopping and searching of suspicious vehicles and occupants is demonstrated in a controlled situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Search of suspicious vehicles and occupants is demonstrated in a controlled situation.

    Seizure of evidence and arresting of people is demonstrated according to the Criminal Procedure Act and Constitution of South Africa.

    The situational risk is assessed in order to minimize the risk to oneself and others.

    Techniques to withdraw from suspicious vehicles after stopping and searching is demonstrated in a controlled situation.
