PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the law enforcement environment who demonstrate physical restraining techniques when dealing with persons who contravene the law or as self defence in cases of personal attacks.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply physical restraining techniques.
  • Use a tonfa and or baton.
  • Defend oneself against offenders.
  • Demonstrate the application of the concept Verbal Judo.
  • Demonstrate the application of searching techniques.

    The purpose of different restraining techniques and associated equipment are explained in terms of their uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restraining techniques includes:
  • Restraining techniques which includes the use of restraining equipment.
  • Restraining techniques which do not include the use of restraining equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The requirements for the use of restraining equipment are described in terms of prescriptive legislation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restraining equipment refers to:
  • Hand-cuffs.
  • Leg-irons.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ways to use restraining techniques and equipment is demonstrated to secure the safety of oneself and of the offenders.

    The different methods of carrying a tonfa are demonstrated to minimise discomfort and safe use thereof.

    The basic principle of weaponless defence is explained in order to determine when it should be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic techniques of weaponless defence are applied against an unarmed offender. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The basic techniques of weaponless defence are applied against an armed offender. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to escape when taken to ground by an offender is demonstrated in order to free oneself.

    Demonstrate the applications of the concept Verbal Judo.

    The principles of verbal judo are identified in the restraining of offenders of the law.

    The basic techniques of verbal judo are demonstrated against unarmed offenders.

    The basic techniques of verbal judo are demonstrated against armed offenders.

    The legal requirements for searching pedestrians and vehicles are explained according to relevant legislations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Searching techniques are identified during the searching of offenders of the law. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Searching techniques against unarmed offenders are demonstrated in order to apprehend a suspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Searching techniques against armed offenders are demonstrated in order to apprehend a suspect.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
