PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the sector, Law, Military Science and Security, sub-field Safety in Society and more specially policing who must attend to and handle a domestic violence incident during the execution of their duties.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the concept domestic violence and its impact on the social economic environment.
  • Explain the responsibilities of all role-players within the concept of domestic violence.
  • Provide assistance to victims of domestic violence.
  • Execute duties of a policing official.

  • Basic understanding of the Criminal Procedure Act regarding search, seizure, arrest and detention.

    The responsibilities of the first responder at the scene are identified and explained according to current legislation.

    The roles and responsibilities of the South African Police Service are identified and explained according to current legislation.

    Role-players and support services are identified and described in terms of their roles and responsibilities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide assistance to victims of domestic violence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Details regarding a complaint of domestic violence are recorded in order to ensure that the complaint is attended to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The scene is observed and secured without compromising own safety and the safety of others. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Securing a scene also refers to ensuring safe access to a scene.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The types of assistance utilised in a domestic violence incident is explained and selected in order to provide basic care to the complainant.

    Assistance refers to but not limited to:
  • Assistance in obtaining shelter for complainant.
  • Assistance in obtaining medical treatment.

    Execute duties of a policing official. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The complainant is informed of his/her rights and assisted in the process of obtaining a protection order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The seizure of firearms and weapons are executed in relation to the powers and duties as stipulated in the Firearm Control Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Requirements for arresting persons with or without a warrant are described in terms of current legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation relevant to an incident of domestic violence is described according to current legislation and organizational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The safekeeping of personal property of a complainant is described according to current legislation and organizational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Information regarding domestic violence incidents are communicated in order to communicated to and inform role-players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Administrative related functions regarding an incident of domestic violence are conducted and adhered to in order to comply with organisational polices and procedures.
