This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. |
PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is for persons working in all sectors of industry who use water in the work place. This unit standard will contribute towards the achievement of a work-related skill in the area of pollution prevention and environmental management
Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Open: however, it would be an advantage for persons attempting this unit standard to have completed the standard: "Use wastewater/sewage and stormwater systems effectively" and to be competent in Communication in language at ABET Level 3. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Apply basic water pollution prevention practices. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Process effluent is channelled and/or swept into the correct drains, as per legislation and Company standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Polluted water is monitored and the correctly disposed of to ensure that sewage and stormwater systems are not contaminated. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Disposal includes at least one, but not limited to, the following methods: absorbent materials; bins; sand, oil and grease traps; SKIPS |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. The Company's internal effluent system is described with reference to pollutants and problems relevant to different effluents. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
4. Implications of not conforming to legislation and the Local Authority by-laws are explained in terms of impact on the environment, the operator and the Company. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Describe & discuss wastewater/sewage & stormwater systems without reference to informatiion. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. The use of water in industry is explained and the problems associated with industrial waste water discussed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Wastewater/sewage and stormwater systems are identified and the consequences of interconnections explained with regard to the impact on health and environment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Pre- treatment of effluent is discussed and reference made to consequences of releasing highly polluted water into the Local Authority's systems. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
4. External sources of water supply and internal drainage systems are identified, and the differences between these explained in terms of effective effluent control practices. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Internal: boreholes, stormwater/sewage systems. External: potable water; recycled non-potable water |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Maintain good effluent control practices. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. The appropriate effluent pipes are connected and disconnected with minimum spillage and due regard for health, hygiene, safety and environment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Demarcated areas and bund walls are free from defects. Any damage to these is either rectified or reported to management. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Sand, oil and grease traps and other pre-treatment of effluent mechanisms are free of debris and maintained according to Company work practices. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
4. Spillages are disposed of in a way that meets with environmental policies and standard operating procedures, and are reported to the relevant authorities. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Includes: Absorbent material, containment, skips |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Maintain good hygiene and housekeeping practices when using industrial water. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Good housekeeping standards are maintained, in accordance with the organization's work practices. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. The work environment is clean and free from debris and hazards. Sources of dirt and/or contamination are identified and removed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Includes, but not limited to: slippery floors, spillages, oil on tiles |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Operators and team members describe their housekeeping and spill control responsibilities correctly. The explanation shows that responsibilities are clearly understood. Team members agree that assistance is offered and acted on in a way that promotes good will. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
4. In-house personal hygiene requirements are described and demonstrated without reference to information sources. These practices are consistently applied in normal working situations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
5. Ways of improving hygiene and housekeeping are noted. Action is taken to improve hygiene and housekeeping where the operator has the authority, or suggestions are reported to personnel responsible for change. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
6. Personal Protective Clothing as laid down in company policy and legislation, is worn and used so that both people and product are protected. |
UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
The relevant Educational Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA) will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard and will register assessors. They will also appoint the internal and external moderators. |
UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE |
Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING |
Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made towards the control of a non routine chemical plant. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING |
Work effectively with others as a member of a team and organisation to conduct, control of the plant activities and to communicate non routine conditions. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING |
Organise and manage oneself and one`s activities responsibly and effectively, while controlling the plant. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING |
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information regarding plant conditions. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING |
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion, with regards to reporting and recording of information and abnormal conditions during the control of the chemical plant. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE |
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others during controlling of the non routine plant. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING |
Demonstrating and understanding the chemical process as a set or related systems by identifying the impact of abnormalities in one part of the system. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO CONTRIBUTING |
In order to contribute to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of society at large, it must be the intention underlying any programme of learning to make an individual aware of the importance of reflecting on and exploring a variety of strategies to learn more effectively. |
