PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
To ensure that the learner is able to:
  • Understand the procedures for receiving wool and mohair clips.
  • Conduct an examination of the wool and mohair received.
  • Perform the registration and processing of wool and mohair clips.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply the prescribed safety procedures during the receiving of wool and mohair bales. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: personal protective equipment (PPE), personal protective clothing (PPC), safety procedures, safe use of tools, housekeeping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct use of PPE during the receiving and registration of wool and mohair bales is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why the appropriate PPC must be worn while receiving and registering wool and mohair bales are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The safety procedures that must utilised when receiving and registering wool and mohair bales are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The safe use of bale handling tools is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The correct bale lifting techniques are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The ways in which good housekeeping practices can minimise safety incidents are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate the procedures for offloading and transference of wool and mohair clips to the examination area. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: handling techniques, forklift operating procedures, trolley operating procedures, transferring wool or mohair 'clip' (producer's batch / consignment).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of consolidating a 'clip' when transferring the wool and mohair to the examination area is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct bale handling techniques are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The operating procedures when using trolleys for offloading and transporting wool and mohair 'clips' are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The forklift operating procedures for offloading and transporting wool and mohair 'clips' are demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the wool and mohair bale examination practices. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: inspection of physical damage, moisture, farmer's description of type and quantity, packaging material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons why the inspection for any physical damage to the bales is conducted at receiving are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The procedures to be followed when moisture in the bales is detected, are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of inspecting the wool and mohair to verify the farmer's/supplier's description of the types delivered is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of comparing the quantity of wool and mohair received, to the farmer's/supplier's claimed quantity is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The various types of packaging material that minimise the contamination of wool and mohair are detailed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the function and use of the various types of documentation that are utilized for receiving and registration of wool and mohair clips. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: delivery notes, goods received notes (GRN), clip advice, comparison, corrections, clip registration, lot allocation, split bales, marking of bales.

    The procedures for the verification of the quantities delivered and the completion of the supplier's delivery note, as per the company's SOPs are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The comparison of the details contained in a supplier's clip advice and the actual contents of the delivery is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of noting any corrections on the supplier's clip advice is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The function of a GRN and its role in validating the status of a delivery is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The process for the registration and lot allocation of a suppliers clip, as per the company's SOPs is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The process for the documentation and integration of split bales, as per the company's SOPs is described.

    The procedures for marking the bales, as per the company's SOPs are explained.

    The Learner:
  • Is expected to perform the specific outcomes reflected in this unit standard without direct supervision.
