This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit is for people who scale tree lengths into log assortments in a production situation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in scaling tree lengths into log assortments.
  • Prepare for log scaling.
  • Scale tree lengths into log assortments to meet specifications.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 and basic safety in forestry operations.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Saw logs, veneer logs, transmission poles and telephone poles are excluded from this unit. Log assortments must include pulp and any one of mining timber or other special orders.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in scaling tree lengths into log assortments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Implications of unplanned scaling and lack of controls during scaling are explained in terms of cost, safety, operational efficiency and wastage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The role of the scaler as part of a team is explained in terms of complying with safety standards and to optimise production.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Factors influencing scaling productivity are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Effects of over and under production in scaling are described.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Effects on subsequent operations, quality, team work, safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Defects in tree and wood quality are explained in terms of their influence on the selection of products to be recovered from the tree.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Effects of inaccurate measuring and measuring equipment are explained in terms of log value recovery.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Prepare for scaling.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Self, other workers, equipment, operational plan, general work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Safety requirements applicable to the operation are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
All personal protective equipment required is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Equipment is checked for suitability, serviceability and calibration, and corrective action is taken, if required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Operational requirements for the log scaling operation are explained.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Specifications of products to be scaled, production target, where scaling will take place, timber flow.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
General work area is check for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Scale tree lengths into log assortments to meet specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Tree lengths are scaled into log assortments using effective techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Tree lengths are marked in terms of company policy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Tree lengths are scaled to ensure optimal usage and value recovery in terms of the specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Scaling is performed to meet operational requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Specifications are met, scaling complements other phases of the operation, work-rate meets pre-determined production target, scaling location.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Standard operating procedures and safe work practices are adhered to throughout the operation.
