PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners that either wish to embark on a career in the Library and Information Services or who already render public and information services to library users to enable them to borrow library items. In order to provide these services they will understand the functions of the circulation system and demonstrate a basic understanding of how libraries function.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Implementing the circulation procedures for library items.
  • Collecting fines and other library charges.
  • Accessing membership records and registering new members.
  • Performing counter and shelving duties to ensure effective library services. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 3 or equivalent.

    Items includes, but is not limited to: books, journals, periodicals, magazines, audio-visual media and posters.

    Returned library items are processed according to library systems, policies and procedures.

    Library items are renewed according to library system, policies and procedures.

    Library items are reserved according to library policies and procedures.
