PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to identify a key blank for a locking mechanism, prepare the locking mechanism for key origination and cut the key to fit the locking mechanism. They will also be able to re-assemble the lock to it full functionality and integrity.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Identify the locking mechanism and key blank.
  • Strip locking mechanism for key origination.
  • Cut an original key.
  • Re-assemble the lock. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy working environment (ID 123589).
  • Maintain key cutting machines (ID 123593).
  • Duplicate and cut keys (ID 123591). 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The term "originate" refers to but is not limited to creating a key without an original using manual and or mechanical mechanisms.

    Type of lock is identified in terms of its operating principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identified key blank is matched to the lock.

    Identified key blank is prepared to match the lock.

    Preparation includes but is not limited to modifications of the key blank.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Locking mechanisms are identified according to their mechanics and operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools needed for stripping the locking mechanisms are selected for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The locking mechanism is stripped according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Key blanks are matched against the locking mechanism in order to facilitate key origination.

    Cut an original key.

    Locksmithing tools are selected in accordance with the job requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Key cutting tools could include but are not limited to files, screw drivers, hand picks, pick gun, punches, chisels, hammers, drills and bits, scribe, gauges, venire/callipers, squares, hacksaws, pliers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process to cut an original key is described in accordance with job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Progressive verification of the origination process is demonstrated in accordance with organisational standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An original key is cut in accordance with job specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Re-assemble the lock.

    Component parts are verified in line with job requirements.

    Component parts include but are not limited to bolts, levers, wafer, spring, pins.
