PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the qualification GETC: Manufacturing, Engineering and related activities and is specifically for learners working in the informal sector who are currently operating, or who wish to start, their own garment making business.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Researching and establishing customer requirements.
  • Presenting customers with a sample garment or sketch which meets customer requirements.
  • Negotiating a selling price with a customer.
  • Confirming an order with a customer. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners have demonstrated Communication and Numeracy competency at ABET Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Trends in garment types, colours, fabrics and retail selling prices are related to a specific market and basic garment types or home textile that may have no fastening devices such as zips or buttons, but could include Velcro or elastic.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Trends in garment types, colours, fabrics and retail selling prices are researched and assessed in terms of local market infrastructure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific requirements are established by meeting and interviewing customers to confirm their needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate garment is created/established according to trends and customer requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Present customers with appropriate sample garment or sketch.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A sketch of a garment and fabric swatches or a sample garment are presented to a customer for approval, according to requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sketch or sample are submitted for approval by customer in accordance with customer needs. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Negotiate selling price and delivery requirements with customer.

    Selling price is successfully negotiated so that both customer and seller are satisfied.
