PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to identify a specific and suitable area for the production of wine-, table - and raisin grapes and how climatic conditions will affect their growth.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the vine structure.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the climates effect on growing grapes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of selecting the grape type(s) and their growing terrains.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the vine structure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The external vine system is identified according to vine identification criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    External vine system may refer to root system, stem, arms and shoots.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The internal vine system is identified according to plant biological criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Internal systems refer to cells and plant tissues.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The function and purpose of the external vine system is identified within own words.

    1. Different kinds of climates are identified within South Africa. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The effect of the climate on grape growing is explained in relation to climate influences. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Climate may include but is not limited to macro-, meso- and micro climate.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of selecting the grape type(s) and their growing terrains. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The properties of soil are explained using own words. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The effect soil properties are explained in relation to the growing of grapes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Soil properties refer to water capacity, soil depth and soil fertility.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The location and terrain for growing grapes are identified in relation to wine, table and raisin grapes. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
