PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to understand and execute vine frame development.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of vine frame development.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of green shoot development methods.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of winter cane development.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of vine frame development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of vine frame development is explained in relation to quality of grapes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Vine frame development may refer to optimum vigour, quality, balanced framework for the facilitation of cultivation practices, even leaf distribution for optimum production and improvement of the microclimate in a canopy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The methods of vine frame development are explained according to industry criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods of vine frame development may refer to single cordon, double cordon, H-form and renewal system to be used during second third and fourth growth season as well as during the winter pruning of different vine frame.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Understand the green shoot development methods.

    1. The vine development in the first season of growth is explained according to criteria.

    2. The development of bush-vines is explained according to criteria.

    3. The development of vines on a single cordon, double cordon and H-form trellis-system is explained according to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The development of table grapes and raisin grapes using the Guyot system/renewal System is explained according to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The development of table grapes and raisin grapes using the H-form method is explained according to criteria. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of winter cane development.

    1. The method for developing a winter cane cordon is explained according to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The problems with the winter cane development are explained according to criteria. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
