PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who work in the construction industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to maintain vegetation and minor structures within the road reserve. Previously disadvantaged persons who through recognition of prior learning will be able to be accessed against this standard and receive National recognition for their competence. This will enhance their employability and career advancement and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the country.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. All classes of roads and road types are included.
2. Road reserve maintenance activities include: grass cutting by hand and brush cutter, cutting of shrubs and trees, eradication of weeds by removal or application of weed killer, road cleaning, removal of debris, dead animals and litter, repair and maintenance to pipe culverts, inlets and outlet structures, drains, and cut-off banks and dykes, repairs to fencing, cleaning and repairs to road signs etc.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Construction (level 1). CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
A memorandum of understanding with other ETQA bodies need to be signed when training providers working in other Sectors, requires assessment of learner achievements to take place against this unit standard.
