PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who work in the construction industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and place precast concrete culverts. Previously disadvantaged persons who through recognition of prior learning will be able to be accessed against this standard and receive National recognition for their competence. This will enhance their employability and career advancement and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the country. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
ABET 4 in Literacy and numeracy. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. Materials include precast concrete pipes, and box culverts,
2. Precast concrete pipes include spigot and socket, in-the wall, and ogee type joints, with and without rubber rings,
3. Pipes are to include for water, sewer and sleeves for other services,
4. Methods of laying include manual and plant assisted
5. Corrective action includes: eliminating and/or reporting
6. Offloading should include both manual methods and with the use of plant.
7. Testing should include visual alignment, and water and air pressure tests.
8. Finishing should include the removal of all excess materials.

2. The cost and socio-economic benefits of more labour intensive pipe installation technologies are explained and compared to plant intensive procedures.

1 Work area is checked for hazards. All hazards are identified and corrective action is taken in line with worksite housekeeping procedures.

2 All tools, equipment and personal protective equipment required for the task are identified and ensured to be functional, and are ready for use at work area.

3 All legislated safety precautions are adhered to in terms of work carried out below ground level.

4 The excavated trench, bedding, and work area is neat, free of obstructions, water, and loose material within specification tolerances, and adheres to all design specifications in accordance with given instructions and drawings.

5 The area is set out to line and level to receive the pipes in accordance with contract requirements.

6 Precast concrete units are offloaded and stacked or placed along the trench (stringing) according to site standard operating procedures.

    2. Work is measured for payment according to industry-prescribed methods, and pay items in the contract schedule of quantities.

    3. The pipeline is tested in accordance with the specifications.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Construction (level 2). CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
    A memorandum of understanding with other ETQA bodies need to be signed when training providers working in other Sectors, requires assessment of learner achievements to take place against this unit standard.
