PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of mechatronics. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the mechatronics NQF level 3 qualification.

Qualifying learners can follow a procedure to design a basic Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programme from a set of instructions, draw a PLC wiring diagram and then install, test and programme the PLC installation. While the micro PLC may vary from company to company the outcomes will be the same.

This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for activities at and above this level. The credits assigned to it are based on the assumption that the learner is learning what is needed for this unit standard as part of his/her learning for a range of related unit standards at this level.
