In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Produce free-hand electrical diagrams of power and control circuits that follow the format laid down by the International Electro-technical Commission (I.E.C.), and explain their operating sequence.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already able to communicate effectively with others.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Power circuits with from 3 to 5 loads, of which complex motor starters constitute a single load on the control circuit.

Circuits may have included: flow switches, warning devices, stop-start stations, delay timers, time clocks, multi-position switches, meters, relays and contactors.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Produce a free hand drawing of a power circuit for refrigeration or air-conditioning machine.
OUTCOME NOTES
Produce a free hand drawing of a power circuit for a refrigeration or air-conditioning machine, which incorporates a star-delta, part winding start and direct on line (DOL) starter for the main motors.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Layout of the diagram and symbols used comply with the provisions of the I.E.C.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. The drawing is correct, neat and legible.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. The importance of a correct electrical diagram is explained.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. The advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of starting motors are listed and discussed.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Produce a free hand drawing of a control circuit containing a time clock.
OUTCOME NOTES
Produce a free hand drawing of a control circuit containing a time clock with manual over ride, warning devices, ammeters, voltmeters, multi-position switches, safety switches, remote and local stop-start stations and single or auto pump-down to operate the power circuit.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Layout of the control circuit and symbols used comply with the provisions of the I.E.C.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. The drawing is correct, neat and legible.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. The circuit is functionally correct.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. The purpose of various control devices is explained.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Explain the sequence of operation of the circuits drawn.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The explanation describes the sequence of events of both circuits from the point of start-up, both manually and automatically, to shut down, including how alarms are activated and reset.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Convert any electrical line diagram to a drawing complying with the I.E.C. standard.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. All components are marked with the correct symbols.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. The power and control circuits are separated from one another.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. The circuit is drawn in its sequence of operation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. The electrical line diagram is correctly converted.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
5. The advantage of diagram complying with the I.E.C. is explained.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.

The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
The diagram must comply with the provisions of the I.E.C. in order that users may understand it in the minimum of time.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
