PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is for people working as junior environmental education practitioners in contexts in which they are required to network actively and understand and address environmental issues or risks. They may work in a number of contexts including environmental education centres, community-based projects, non-governmental organisations, government departments or industry.
People credited with this unit standard will be able to network broadly in order to access information or support from a wide range of sources. They will be able to select and organise this information into a coherent resource list relevant to a key environmental issue or risk. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
The candidate will be required to demonstrate an FETC or RPL equivalent in order to gain access to the National Certificate in Environmental Education, Training and Development Practice (EETDP) (NQF Level 5) for which this is a core unit standard. Competence in written and verbal communication in the language(s) of instruction at FETC level is essential. Basic skills of finding information from documents, directories and the Internet (if available) are required to complete this unit standard successfully.
This unit standard should be undertaken in conjunction with the following unit standards: |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
This unit standard relates to a unit standard at level 4: EE 4.05 (Network locally in order to source information, advice and support concerning an environmental issue or risk). Whereas the level 4 unit standard focuses on local networking and on a relatively small-scale environmental issue, this unit standard requires the candidate to draw on a much broader network. It also focuses on a major environmental issue that is relevant in the South African context. The issue should be relatively complex in its causes and scope and wide-ranging in its effects.
In a course situation, it is recommended that candidates work co-operatively in small research groups. Each group in a given cohort of learners should select a different issue around which to network. By the end of the programme of learning, each group should provide copies of their networking list to the other groups so that the entire group benefits from the exercise. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Identify key environmental issues and select one issue to research |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Identify and list a number of key environmental issues of relevance to South Africa. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES |
Embedded knowledge:
Concept of environment and the scope of environmental issues. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Draw on a variety of source materials, e.g. mass media, books, magazines, the Internet. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Work with others in a small group to select one key environmental issue to research. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
A major environmental issue having biophysical, social, economic and political elements; highly relevant to the South African context. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Identify a broad network providing support around an environmental issue |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Organisations and individuals locally, nationally and internationally with a particular interest in the chosen environmental issue. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Identify environmental networks, directories and/or Internet search engines to facilitate the initial development of a networking list. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Use directories and/or the Internet effectively to draw up a list of key organisations or individuals internationally that are concerned about the particular environmental issue. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES |
Embedded knowledge:
Use of directories and/or the Internet as networking tools. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
At least ten contacts. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Record initial contact information neatly and in an easily usable form appropriate to context and resources available. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Provide essential detail, e.g. organisation, contact addresses and numbers, space to record results of research; Record form, table, cards or computer database. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Network broadly in order to source information and support |
OUTCOME NOTES |
Embedded knowledge:
Effective use of available information and communication technologies. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Use appropriate and available technologies (e.g. letter, phone, fax, e-mail or visit). |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Contact organisations or individuals to determine the nature, scope and relevance of the resources and support offered. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Use appropriate communications technologies efficiently and cost-effectively. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Follow up key contacts pointed out during the first round of networking. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Compile networking details and information |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Systematically record all relevant contact details and compile this into an accurate, concise resource list in an easily retrievable form. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Networking list providing full contact details, resources and services offered, notes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Compile all relevant information on the particular environmental issue and store it in an easily retrievable form. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Physical and/or electronic files of information on the particular environmental issue. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Facilitate further networking by making network lists available to others. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Groups make their lists available to one another so that all candidates have a directory of contacts covering a range of key environmental issues. |
