PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people working as environmental education practitioners in a variety of contexts, e.g. environmental education centres, community-based projects, business or government. It describes features of ethical and professional conduct required of an environmental education practitioner.

A person credited with this unit standard will have achieved the following specific outcomes:
  • Describe behaviour expected of an environmental education practitioner
  • Describe what is understood by professional conduct
  • Develop a set of guiding principles for ethical and professional conduct, and conduct oneself accordingly

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The learner should demonstrate GETC or equivalent. This unit standard does not assume that the learner has prior environmental education training or experience.

In order to be able to draw on knowledge of what constitutes environmental values and ethics, his unit standard should ideally be undertaken at the same time as unit standard EE4.08 Apply introductory knowledge of environmental ethics in the context of personal experience, or another environmental ethics unit standard relevant to the level of the particular candidate.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
This unit standard encourages learners to determine for themselves guidelines for ethical and professional conduct that befit an environmental educator. It requires that learners take account of behaviour consistent with educators, environmentalists and professionals in the workplace. Learners should draw on personal experiences of good and bad practice, and on case studies (e.g. biographies) to help them formulate what constitutes exemplary behaviour.

Environmental educators are role models in society and it is essential that their behaviour is consistent with the goals of the profession. This unit standard should be undertaken as early as possible in order to provide learners with opportunities to engage with the challenges and responsibilities of the profession. It is therefore required as a core unit standard at level 4.
