PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for anyone who needs to mix refractory monolithics for installation and maintenance procedures.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • plan and prepare for work activities,
  • mix refractory monolithics,
  • perform quality control and assurance activities,
  • perform end of work activities.

    This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner within the refractory construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of civil engineering construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and progression within the refractory construction and civil engineering contexts. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Description of required skills, knowledge and understanding on:

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    In the context of this unit standard refractory monolithics refer to castables, mouldables, rammables, vibratables, plasters, sprayables, fettling and gunite materials.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is moderate in range, established and familiar and offers clear choices of routine responses. The learning demand employs basic operational knowledge and readily available information. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification.

    The credit value assigned to this unit standard is appropriate and reflects the average length of time for an average qualifying learning to become competent

    Recommended contact time and individual learning = 30 h
    Recommended time spent in structured learning in the workplace and assessment = 10h

    1. Engineering sketches, specifications and instructions are interpreted according to standard operating procedures.

    2. The work area, tools, equipment and consumables are prepared according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Mixing equipment refer to conventional concrete mixers, fixed pan mixers, rotating paddle mixer-conveyor, hand held stirrers and laboratory mixers.
  • Consumables refer to bagged refractory materials, pre-mixed materials, additives and stainless steel needles fibres.

    3. Personal preparation is done according to standard operating procedures.

    4. Information and procedural activities are communicated to relevant parties according to standard operating procedures and basic business and team ethics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Non-conforming consumables and refractory monolithics are identified, segregated and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Non-conforming consumables refers to shelf life expired material, hardened material (due to air or moisture exposure).
    Non-conforming mixed monolithics include but are not limited to flash setting, slow/non-setting, contaminated material and "ball forming".

    2. The parameters of mixing of refractory monolithics are controlled according the standard operating procedures.

    3. Quality assurance and control reports are recorded and communicated according to standard operating procedures.
