PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for anyone who has to practice self-management principles responsibly and effectively during the installation and re-installing of castable/mouldable refractory materials by applying scientific techniques and solving related problems during refractory installation or maintenance processes.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • collect information and organise activities for castable/mouldable refractory materials installation and repair,
  • install castable/mouldable refractory materials,
  • remove and re-instate damaged castable/mouldable refractory materials,
  • perform end of work activities.

    This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner within the refractory construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and progression within the construction and civil engineering contexts. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Description of required skills, knowledge and understanding on:
  • Literacy and numeracy NQF 2,
  • Mixing of refractory monolithics,
  • Interpreting and understanding engineering drawings,
  • The use of measuring equipment.
  • The use of hand held engineering power tools.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a range of well-developed skills and offers a significant choice of procedures. Some relevant theoretical knowledge, interpretation of available information, discretion and judgement, as well as a range of known responses to familiar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in skilled occupations.

    The credit value assigned to this unit standard is appropriate and reflects the average length of time for an average qualifying learning to become competent.

    Recommended contact time and individual learning = 30 h
    Recommended time spent in structured learning in the workplace and assessment = 20h

    2. The work area, background area, tools, equipment and materials are prepared according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Background surfaces may include metal, wooden, plastic, concrete, brick, insulation boards or ceramic blankets.
  • Mechanical aids and handling equipment may include conveyor belts, forklifts or cranes.
  • Types of rammers may include hand held tamping tool or pneumatic driven tools.

    3. Castable/mouldable refractory materials are prepared and verified according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Non-conforming castables/mouldables may include setting time expired, contaminated castables/ mouldables, unworkable or inconsistent castables/mouldables.
  • Cutting mouldables may include trimming lining surface by spade, trimming lining surface with scraper, Scutch hammer, hammer with bolster or surface rougher.

    1. Installation techniques and processes using castable/mouldable refractory materials are applied and controlled according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Castable/mouldable refractory materials installation techniques and processes refer to layering, anchorage and positioning.
  • Anchorage may include refractory anchors, metal or stainless steel fasteners or ceramic anchor bricks.
  • Shutters may include timber planks, wooden boards and plywood or metal panels.
  • Formers may include wooden, plastic or metal pre-assembled units.
  • Breather holes may include spiked holes.
  • Contraction/ expansion joints may include hand made joints.
  • Bonding refers to ramming mouldable into previously placed mouldables.
  • Hazards during installation of monolithics may include heights, burns, gasses, brick chips, heat or dust.

    2. Non-conforming and waste castable/mouldable refractory materials are discarded according to standard operating procedures.

    3. Castable/mouldable refractory materials are protected and cured according to standard operating procedures.

    Curing refers to covering with wet blankets/plastic sheets, water/chemical sprays/coating.
