PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electrical engineering and maintenance environment.
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Isolate, maintain, repair and do fault finding on a range of single-phase AC machines and control gear.
This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:
  • Introduction to industry (work environment).
  • Statutory requirements.
  • Use of relevant testing and measuring equipment and hand-tools.
  • Select, install, connect and commission single phase AC machines and control gear.
  • Basic safety within the electrical environment
  • Selection and use of basic hand tools
  • Use of electrical test instruments

  • Single phase A.C. Machines and control gear include, but are not limited to Induction and universal motors, and alternators, induction and universal motor use in hazardous areas, direct on line / forward and reverse control gear.
  • All work to be carried out under direct supervision.
  • Testing and measuring equipment includes but not limited to multi-meters, Insulation tester, and Clip-on ammeter.
  • Statutory requirements include but are not limited to OHS Act, SABS 0142, Local Authority requirements, manufacturers specifications and worksite procedures.
  • Electrical test instruments approved for use in hazardous areas include but are not limited to multi-meters, (ohms, volts, amps), insulation tester, voltage line tester, and clip on ammeter.
