PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing for the funeral ceremony
  • Conducting the funeral ceremony
  • Directing the internment ceremony 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    1.Correct identification of human remains is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2.Documentation and funeral accessories are verified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accessories include lowering device, belts, cranks, stands, drapes, rails, grave plants, grave mats, gazebos, tents, chairs, levelling boards, receptacles, flower baskets and petals, flowers, drinking water, water jugs, glasses, shovels, danger tape, tissues and/or sal volatilie / smelling salts.

    2.Internment instructions are given and lowering is monitored.

    3.Mourners are invited to participate in funeral ceremony.

    4.The bereaved are greeted.

    5.Instructions to close the grave are given to relevant parties.

    In order to contribute to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of society at large, it must be the intention underlying any programme of learning to make an individual aware of the importance of: being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts when conducting funeral ceremonies.
