PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Marketing and Merchandising where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the funeral industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Maintaining a clean and safe funeral business
  • Maintaining funeral business display and work areas 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Computer literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Housekeeping procedures are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Housekeeping will include washing, polishing, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, emptying bins
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Clients are not disrupted or inconvenienced while housekeeping activities are undertaken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All exterior surfaces are clean and neat in accordance with organisational requirements 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. All interior surfaces are clean, tidy and neat in accordance with organisational requirements 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Surfaces will include floor, counter, walls, ceiling, windows, merchandise, desks and chairs
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Fixtures and fitting are clean and free from dust in accordance with organisational requirements

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Work areas are clean and tidy and are maintained according to requirements 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Display area is tidy, neat and clean at all times. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Display area will include floor, counters, desks, walls, windows, offices, ashtrays, plants, merchandise area and storeroom.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Merchandise is clean, free from damage and in the correct location. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Funeral merchandise will include coffins, caskets, wreaths, tombstones, pamphlets and leaflets, handles, shrouds, runs, ornamental fittings, linings, plaques.
