PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Gathering and collating resource data for decision making purposes
  • Sourcing disaster equipment and resources
  • Placing and dismantling disaster equipment and resources on site 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Preliminary data is gathered surrounding the extent of the disaster 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A disaster will include any mass fatality beyond resources of normal activities of a funeral company. This type of disaster requires specialists from other disciplines to perform certain duties specific to the severity and size of the disaster

    2. Gather information relating to resources and facilities in the vicinity of disaster site 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Data is collated accurately and required format 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Data will include client files, pathologists reports, identification report, orthodontist report, personal effects, instructions relating to destination, disposition of remains, photographic records, expense records

    4. Data is gathered and collated within agreed time-frames

    1. Disaster equipment and resources are available at identified location and within agreed time frame

    Resources and equipment will include vehicles, blankets stretches, body bags, embalmers, embalming equipment, instruments and fluids, tents, tables, catering, ablution facilities, accommodation, lighting, refrigeration, power communication, equipment, protective clothing, water, air conditioning, equipment, protective clothing, water, air conditioning, other disaster teams
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Disaster equipment is erected and coupled to services in required operational format

    3. Disaster equipment is dismantled and disposed off according to instructions
