PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Cleaning the human remains physically for storage purposes
  • Sealing and plugging of orifices 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

  • Orifices will include eyes, mouth, nose, ears, throat, and anus

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Clean the human remains physically for storage purposes 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Personal effects and clothing are removed from the human remains according to cultural values and norms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Medical supplies and equipment are removed from the human remains. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Medical equipment will include needles, ET Tubes, IV Jellos, electrodes, Naso gastric tubes and urine catheters, casts and braces.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Human remains are washed to remove extrinsic foreign matter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Human remains are disinfected according to established procedures and accredited chemicals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Protective clothing and equipment is worn at all times whilst working with human remains and in a mortuary. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Protective clothing and equipment will include safety goggles, mask, protective gown, apron, gloves and water repellent boots.

    6. Problem areas are reported to a senior member of staff as soon as possible.

    1. Eyes are closed permanently. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Mouth is closed permanently. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sealing the mouth and eyes will include any procedures that keeps the mouth and eyes closed permanently.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Ears, nose and throat are plugged and sealed to prevent fluid leaking out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Body fluids are not leaking from orifices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Health and hygiene practices, measures and procedures are adhered to before, during and after sealing and plugging.
