PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Ether Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Organising administration, materials and equipment for the preparation of the funeral site
  • Confirming and checking the funeral site
  • Assembling materials and equipment and preparing the grave
  • Organising and arranging the funeral site 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Materials and equipment to be used at a funeral site are identified and listed in terms of burials, cremations and memorial services. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Materials and equipment will include lowering machine, belts, cranks, stands, drapes, rails, grave planks, grave mats, gazebos, tents, chairs, levelling boards, petal/soil receptacles, flower petals, flowers, drinking water, water jugs, glasses and shovels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Additional specialised material and equipment are identified and listed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Additional specialised materials and equipment will include cement mixer, cement, sand, stone, water, flower stands, national flag.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All materials and equipment are assembled for loading onto vehicle to funeral site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Materials and equipment are loaded on vehicle according to established procedures.

    5. Necessary documentation for authorisation of the site is obtained.

    6. Transportation is organised and available in required time adhered to as per instructions.

    1. Materials and equipment are unloaded in the correct manner and at a correct site.

    2. Ridges for belt removal are constructed

    3. Grave site is laid out with planks, mats, stands and drapes

    4. Lowering machine is assembled, placed in correct position and adjusted

    Accessories will include flower baskets, danger tape, tissues and funeral arch.

    Understand the world as a set of related systems in that poor preparation of a funeral site could lead to problems when conducting the funeral.
