PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of roof carpentry activities and coordinate and control these activities in order to ensure that quality, safety and site specifications are adhered to.

This competence forms part of The Elective learning and represents a specific context of supervision, i.e. supervising roof carpentry activities.

It contributes to the development of a professional community of Building Construction Supervisors. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Its contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

This unit standard is intended for a person supervising roof carpentry and related activities.
The learner is required to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding with regard to the processes and requirements involved with the manufacturing and erecting of roof trusses and the cladding of roof structures.

The typical scope of this unit standard is:

Work processes should comply with:
1. Occupational Health and Safety Act, safety plan and company health and safety procedures
2. Quality procedures and specifications
3. Site operating procedures and company policies
4. Manufacturer and supplier specifications

Access equipment includes:
1. System scaffold with ladder access
2. Trestle scaffold
3. Extension ladders
4. Step ladders
5. Maximum height of scaffolding is 2 meters

Roof cladding includes the use of:
1. Concrete and clay tiles
2. Slate tiles
3. Corrugated galvanised sheeting
4. Corrugated fibre cement sheeting

Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA for "The National Certificate in the Supervision of Building Construction Processes"

Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA

CETA - ETQA, or other ETQA's who have a Memorandum of Understanding in place with CETA-ETQA, would be responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
