PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to deploy and recover underwater positioning transponders in any working environment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Prepare Acoustic Positioning Transponders for deployment
  • Deploy Acoustic Positioning transponders
  • Recover Acoustic Positioning transponders
  • Report on beacon status

    Any learner wishing to be assessed may arrange to do so without having to attend additional education and training. The learner and assessor will decide jointly on the most appropriate assessment procedure

    Recover Positioning Transponders

    1. Ensure vessel is in the correct position before confirming that release can go ahead. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Confirm transponder number for release. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Communicate to senior surveyor that transponder has been sighted and commence with recovery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Confirm transponder number, return transponder to vessel and ensure that transponder is correctly handled and cleaned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Apply operational safety rules and standard or operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    An understanding of acoustic telemetry and the affects of weather in beacon recovery is demonstrated.

    1. Obtain correct Deployment / Recovery log sheet.

    2. Record the Pre and Post deployment checks carried out on the transponder.

    3. Record the telemetry responses of the transponder to commands given.

    4. Inform relevant personnel of any abnormalities.

    A thorough understanding of the importance of good record keeping for prevention of damage to, or loss of equipment.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with the FE / HE registrar.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • A minimum of 2 (two) years` practical, relevant occupational experience
  • Declared competent in all the outcomes of the National Assessor Unit Standards as
    stipulated by SAQA

    Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant must be provided (Portfolio of Evidence)

  • Communicated means, but is not limited to, verbal communication, radio transmission and telephone.
  • Transducer is a hybrid Latin word meaning to "lead across". These are devices that convert two forms of energy into each other. In the hydrographic environment they convert between sound and electric or mechanic energy. Types of Transducer include Transponder, Projector and Hydrophone.
  • Projector converts electric or mechanic energy into sound energy. (See Transducer.)
  • Hydrophone converts sound energy into electric or mechanic energy. (See Transducer.)
  • Transponder converts electric or mechanic energy into sound energy and the reverse. (See Transducer.)
  • Telemetry is the transmission of signals in a medium. In this case sound waves through water.
  • Loop: A metal link specifically designed to connect the weight strop to the release mechanism of the underwater beacon.
