PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the understanding of mechanical components. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of keys, pulleys, shaft couplings and screw threads
  • Demonstrating an understanding of bearings and lubrication
  • Demonstrating an understanding of gears and gear drives
  • Demonstrating an understanding of valves, pumps and pipe fittings 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 4 on the NQF or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Mechanical components will include keys, pulleys, shaft couplings, screw threads, bearings, lubrication, gears, gear drives, valves, pumps and pipefittings.
  • Pulleys will include flat pulley, cone pulley, and pulleys with straight and curved spokes, solid pulley and split pulleys, single V-pulley and multi V-pulleys.
  • Shaft couplings will include the flange, pin type-flexible, Raffard, universal, muff, Oldham, marine and Bibby-type shaft couplings.
  • Couplings and clutches will include claw clutch, spiral jaw clutch, single and multiple disc clutches, cone clutch and centrifugal clutch.
  • Screw thread profiles will include V-shaped ISO metric screw thread, pipe thread, acme thread and buttress screw thread (included angles in degrees where applicable must be shown).
  • Screw thread terminology will include nominal diameter, pitch diameter, root diameter, pitch, lead, included angle of thread, external and internal screw thread, left-hand screw thread, single-start and multi-start screw thread.
  • Bearing types will include radial, ball, roller, thrust, guide, angular load and self-aligning bearings.
  • Lubricating devices will include (gravity feed): siphon wick, sight feed and needle lubrications; (grease lubrication): stauffer grease cup and telltale grease cup; (splash lubrication) oil ring lubricator and oil bath.
  • Gear drives will include spur, bevel, helical, rack and pinion, worm and worm wheel, internal, epicyclical and hypoid gears.
  • Gear terminology will include addendum, dedendum, nominal diameter, root diameter, pitch circle diameter, pitch circle, circular pitch, base circle, pressure angle, module, circular tooth thickness, chordal thickness, line of action, fillet radius, number of teeth, full depth of tooth, working depth of tooth, clearance and backlash.
  • Valves will include non-return, pressure relief and stop valves.
  • Pipefittings will include socket, cat, tee, tube, elbow and flanged bend.
  • Major parts of valves, pumps and pipe fittings will include flanged pipe couplings, heavy duty flanges, simultaneously screwed and welded flanges, expansion bends and expansion joints.
  • Pumps will include ram and eccentric, oscillating cylinders, centrifugal vane pumps, gear pump, diaphragm pump, disc valve pump and screw pump.

    1. The functions of valves, pumps and pipe fittings are described in accordance with manufacturers requirements.

    2. A free-hand drawing is produced which explains the working principles of valves within agreed time frames.

    3. A free-hand drawing is produced which shows the use of pipe fittings within agreed time frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. A labelled, free hand drawing is produced of major components of valves, pumps and pipe fittings within agreed time frames.

    5. The working principles of pumps are described in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
