PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for people who are responsible for the maintenance of minor structures in a road environment. People credited with this unit standard will be able to replace and repair pipes, culverts, inlets, outlets, wing walls, manholes, catch pits, stone pitching, gabion baskets under traffic conditions. Previously disadvantaged persons who through recognition of prior learning will be able to be accessed against this standard and receive National recognition for their competence. This will enhance their employability and career advancement and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the country. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
ABET Level 4 in Literacy and ABET Level 3 in Numeracy.

Identify and use protective clothing in general construction, apply fist aid, use and maintain hand tools on a construction site, use and maintain power hand tools on a construction site, implement road side safety procedures, use and maintain small plant and equipment on a construction site, conduct routine repairs to concrete structures, batch and mix concrete by mass using a concrete mixer, install gabion baskets on a civil construction site, erect and strip formwork for straight walls, columns and bases, erect and dismantle scaffolding under general supervision, assemble and tie reinforcing cages, organise and control the installation of pre-cast concrete pipes, install manholes and chambers on a civil construction site, organise and control surface repairs for roads, transport personnel, material and equipment using light delivery vehicle, work in confined spaces on construction sites.

1. Tools and minor plant types are identified that is suitable for cutting concrete and reinforcing, compacting soils in trenches, loading and laying heavy material mixing, placing concrete, erection of scaffolding and repairing surfaced roads.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Construction Workers. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
