PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Those learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to mix batches of sand and other materials for further processing in an integrated plant.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Prepare to mix batches
  • Mix batches
  • Conduct post mixing activities
  • Address abnormal or emergency conditions in a batch mixing plant.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence regarding health, safety, environmental and quality issues and technology relevant to processing (chemical) materials.
  • Where learners do not have the relevant expertise, appropriate adjustments must be made to the learning programme.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Field and process control (using an instrument/computer based control system) activities are carried out to achieve batch mixing
    1. Off loading may include the use of conveyors, tippers, loaders and the completion of sampling and documentation
    2. Steps include weighing, feeding, mixing, storing and dispatching
    3. Quality assurance may include recording of quantities, checking quantities are within limits specified, samples taken, samples analyzed, abnormalities reported.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Prepare to mix batches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Instructions for mixing are interpreted ensuring that the learner knows what material must be mixed and when the batch(es) are required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Quantities and quality of material are checked confirming that adequate supplies are available to mix the specified batches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Raw materials are unloaded (as appropriate) from delivery transport and are stored for use in accordance with site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Pre-use checks of equipment are conducted confirming that the plant is ready and safe for mixing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Relevant people are informed that mixing will commence in accordance with best practice and site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
    6. Appropriate safety precautions are taken in accordance with site specific instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Mix batches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Units of equipment are started and stopped as required to complete the mixing of materials.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Steps in the total mixing process are carried out in the sequence specified in the instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Quality assurance activities are conducted in accordance with instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Conduct post-mixing activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Mixed materials are transferred and or stored according to site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Equipment, machinery and site are returned to acceptable condition in accordance with best practice and site specific requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Non conformance of condition is rectified or reported in accordance with site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Documentation is completed and appropriate people are informed in accordance with site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Quantities of raw materials available are recorded and reported according to site specific instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Address abnormal or emergency conditions in a batch mixing plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Abnormal or emergency conditions are described with reference to instructions and batch mixing activities on a specific batch mixing site.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Actions on abnormal and emergency conditions carried out within a batch mixing plant or an appropriate simulated environment are in accordance with best practice and site specific instructions.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
The Educational Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA), for the Chemical Industry in consultation with GEN/FETQA will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard and will register assessors. They will also appoint the internal and external moderators.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made regarding the quality of the batches produced, state of the equipment and machinery used, material mixed and safety.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others as a member of a team and organisation as is required to ensure that the batching activities proceed effectively complying with instructions and the downstream process requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage oneself and one`s activities responsibly and effectively to conduct work efficiently.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information to ensure productivity in the plant and quality of batched prepared.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion ensuring that records comply with instructions and best practice and that relevant people know status of the batching operation.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others to ensure that batches are in accordance with instructions thereby minimizing wastage of material and energy.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
