PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners' who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to build, connect, clad and erect timber frame walls and install appropriate insulation where required, in accordance with the design and construction methods specified in working drawings for houses of a basic design ensuring that the applicable National Building standards, health and safety regulations and prescribed time frames are adhered to.

The competencies contained in this unit standard will provide Community House Builders with an area of specialisation that will lead to the development of enhanced skills and knowledge amongst professional Community House Builders who are able to offer alternative construction methods to meet a wider range of needs and purposes of potential home builders within the community. It should result in improved quality and service delivery in community house building.

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between Learners' and new competencies to be achieved.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
NQF Level 1 (ABET Level 4) numeracy and literacy competencies

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

  • CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements for Learners' who meet the requirements of this qualification.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
    Understand and explain:
  • Timber properties
  • Tools, equipment and fixing materials
  • Properties of exterior and interior cladding materials
  • Insulation material properties
  • Impact of insulation on health and the environment
  • Impact of wind loading (suction and pressure) on light timber frame houses

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking:
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of timber frame work to brick walls when discussing the range of building methods with potential home builders within the community

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community:
  • Co-operate with concrete workers to ensure that the size of the concrete slab and the size of the timber frame walls correspond and that the slab is level

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information:
  • Read and interpret specifications to accurately determine the layout of windows and doors
  • Read and interpret specifications to accurately determine the size of the timber frames

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, symbolic, and/or language skills in various modes:
  • Communicate in a clear and comprehensive manner when giving concrete workers information so that the size of the concrete slab when laid, is in accordance with specified dimensions

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environments and the health of others:
  • The impact of insulation on health and the environment
  • Sustainability of building material i.e. Timber is sustainable whereas producing concrete uses energy

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation:
  • Wall components must be securely connected to each other so that they do not collapse when erected
  • Wall components are securely fixed to the foundation slab to prevent them from lifting as a result of wind force
