PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners` who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to set out, excavate and cast concrete strip foundations and build foundation walling onto which a concrete slab is cast in accordance with the design and construction methods specified in working drawings for houses of a basic design ensuring that the applicable National Building standards, health and safety regulations and prescribed time frames are adhered to.

The competencies contained in this unit standard complement the other building competencies that make up this qualification and will contribute to the development of professional Community House Builders who are able to use science and technology in a responsible and cost effective manner. These competencies should result in improved quality and service delivery in community house building.

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between Learners` and new competencies to be achieved.

The successful completion of this unit standard will provide Learners` with access to the National Certificate in Construction Masonry - NQF Level 3.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking:
  • Identify the slope of the ground and determine whether step foundations are to be installed
  • Observe the soil conditions and report any identified irregularities to relevant authorities i.e. site engineer or architect and take the recommended precautions into consideration when commencing with construction activities
  • Identify the design and construction method of the foundations so that the correct ratios are used for concrete and types of mortars

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others as members of a team, group, organisation and community:
  • Ensure trench excavations are adequately safeguarded to prevent accident or injury to unauthorised visitors who might enter the building site

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage your activities responsibly and effectively:
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order to ensure that foundation construction is carried out effectively and the cost to company for the frequent replacement of tools and equipment is minimised
  • Plan work so that the excavation and casting of building foundations is completed within the specified deadlines

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information:
  • Read and interpret the working drawing carefully and thoroughly so that specified foundation dimensions are correctly transferred during the setting out process

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, symbolic, and/or language skills in various modes:
  • Confirm your understanding of all specified requirements with the client/architect before commencing with excavation and casting of concrete strip foundations to minimise future delays that might be caused because this work has to be redone
  • Communicate in a clear and audible manner when issuing instructions to team members so that all verbal instructions are clearly understood and can be carried out as required

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environments and the health of others:
  • Use the specified mortar and ratios to achieve the correct mortar mix
  • Use levelling devices to accurately set out and transfer levels

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems, by recognising that problem solving contexts do not exist in isolation:
  • Ensure that materials, tools and equipment used to excavate and cast foundations is safely and securely stored and protected on the building site to minimise the risk of accident or injury to site personnel or visitors to the building site

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO CONTRIBUTING
Reflecting on and exploring a variety of strategies to learn more effectively:
  • Assess the work that you have completed to identify areas that can be improved on when excavating and casting concrete strip foundations or slabs and building foundation walling in the future
