PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for claims assessors, negotiators and other learners who assess the damage in a fire or accident claim.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing to conduct an assessment.
  • Investigating the merits of a claim.
  • Making a decision to settle a claim.
  • Concluding a settlement with a client.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE

  • Claims against the fire and accident sections of a Multimark (TM) policy.
  • Personal domestic, commercial, industrial and corporate claims.

    1. Information relating to the client is analysed in order to compile a profile. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The schedule of cover is analysed to establish the cover in terms of the policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. A claim's history is analysed for information relevant to the current claim and risk management requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Investigate the merits of a claim.

    1. Information about a loss is gathered in an on-site observation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The observed situation is compared to the policy cover and a decision is made as to whether the claim is valid. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The loss is quantified with reference to item identification, estimation of damage or loss and the limitations of policy cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The rules of the insurer are applied to the claim with reference to existing service level agreements.

    4. A proposal is made for the settlement of the claim.

    2. Techniques to manage potential conflict are demonstrated in real situations or in role-play.

    3. Documents required by the underwriter are completed and an indication is given of the consequences of accepting the contract of settlement.

    4. A written report is compiled for the insurer/underwriter according to organisation requirements.

    Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be obtained from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body, through summative and formative assessment by a registered assessor.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the INSQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the INSQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with INSQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Agreement with INSQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
