PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for managers of organisations and learners who manage asset risk in insurance and other organisations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing potential safety risks in a business environment.
  • Applying the risk management process to a specific organisation in order to minimise safety risk.
  • Describing the controls necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Proposing a safety plan for an organisation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this Unit Standard. Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical and Financial Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is
  • Environment risks include but are not limited to lighting, work conditions, pollution, pesticides and ergo dynamics.
  • Human safety risks include but are not limited to an operator or person in the work environment and effects on health and welfare.
  • Physical safety risks include but are not limited to machine, product stacking, processes, safety features and canteens.

    1. Three different safety administration systems are compared for effectiveness in creating and preserving evidence.

    2. The operating risk standards of an organisation are analysed to determine the effectiveness of the safety management plan with reference to human, physical and environment safety.

    Propose a safety plan for an organisation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. A safety audit is conducted at a selected organisation in order to identify deficiencies in the safety management system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Measures to remedy deficiencies are suggested for physical, human and environment safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. A possible implementation strategy is devised for a selected organisation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be obtained from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body, through summative and formative assessment by a registered assessor.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the INSQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the INSQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with INSQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Agreement with INSQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
