PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this unit standard will be doing so with the intention of reaching the full qualification "National Certificate (Construction) for the installation of floor coverings". Learners will be involved in, or working within a floor covering installation environment.

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to install cork flooring with confidence, including -
  • Determining tools required to install cork tiles
  • Evaluating and preparing sub-floor as necessary in preparation for installation of cork tiles.
  • Setting out starting point
  • Applying adhesive in accordance with manufacturer`s / SABS instructions
  • Laying cork tiles in accordance with manufacturer`s specifications
  • Applying correct housekeeping procedures

    This competence lays the foundation for the development of further floor covering competencies and underpins competencies to be acquired as part of a learning progression pathway. The generic competencies as outlined in this unit standard should facilitate portability of floor covering installation skills across different contexts within the construction industry.

    It contributes to the development of a professional community of floor covering practitioners who understand the challenges and opportunities of the South African construction context. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Installation tools include:
  • Broom, carpenter`s pencil, set square, tape measure, coloured chalk line, scraper, rubbing stone, pin punch and hammer, screwdriver set, flat trowel, mohair roller and brush, utility knife, PVC bucket and mixing tool, hand roller.

    1. Lay the first row of tiles along the chalk line already struck. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Return to the center and begin laying four tiles forward before completing areas to the left or the right of the center. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Once open area is completely laid, all partial tiles are then cut into place using a full tile as a gauge.

    4. Doorways and stair profiles are finished with edging strip, nosings and PVC skirtings where specified.
