PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons who intend following a career in the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the domain of cement, lime, aggregates and sand.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of blasting operations in quarries.
  • Prepare for quarry blasting.
  • Charge up and initiate the blast.
  • Treat and blast misfires.
  • Destroy old explosives.
  • Conduct post-blasting operations.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of blasting materials in quarry operations in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2.

    The whole standard refers to primary rock breaking operations in quarries by means of blasting.

    Geological and survey data are determined and documented (blasting plan) and the blast plan is consulted and specific measures implemented in accordance with specified requirements.

    Support requirements are anticipated and coordinated in accordance with specified requirements.

    Personal protective equipment is selected, checked and used in accordance with specified requirements.

    Primers are made up and installed, stemming is conducted, timing is installed, connections are tested, the warning siren is activated and all personnel cleared from site in accordance with specified requirements.

    The blast is initiated and blasting operations are monitored and incidents and non-conformances dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    Environmental aspects are monitored and anomalies dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.
