PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the law enforcement environment who are required to plan, prepare and manage tactical policing operations including the debriefing of operations and completion of administration. Tactical operations must always be conducted within organisational, strategic and legal requirements and learners will be able to manage tactical operations within this environment upon the completion of this unit standard.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate information pertaining to the specific tactical operation in order to complete an operational assessment.
  • Prepare for tactical operation.
  • Execute the tactical operation.
  • Debrief the tactical operation.
  • Complete all operational administration.

    Evaluate information pertaining to the specific tactical operation in order to complete an operational assessment.

    Information received is prioritised according to operational objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information is analysed using operational assessment methods to determine the possible tactical options and strategies.

    Sources of information are tasked to collect additional information needed to operational assessment.

    Sources of information also includes photo's and plans for the area of operations.

    The mission of the operation is analysed in order to determine possible limitations.

    Possible hypotheses of the destabiliser are identified in order to inform planning for the special tactical operation.

    Feasible and attainable strategy is developed to prevent the identified crime or threat.

    Tactical options are selected to address the prevention of the identified crime or threat according to the organisational goals and objectives.

    The environment of the area of operations is studied and options selected to achieve the mission of the operation.

    An operational plan is compiled according to objectives of the tactical operation.

    Possibilities and intentions are analysed in order to establish links with the reserve and members in-line.

    Contingency plans are developed for identified tactical operations which may occur in the area of sport and disasters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An operational command structure is designed in terms of implementation in line with tactical operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An information network is developed to gather and assess operational information needed to make operational decisions to achieve the organisational goals.

    This includes the establishing of a separate information channel to manage the information flow.

    A join operational centre (JOC) is designed to address the needs of the specific operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The structuring of role players is analysed within the JOC to ensure operational effectiveness and have a unified command. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The deployment and tracking of resources is assessed using a tactical board. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    EEI's received from the information section are evaluated and prioritised according to the list of possible threats. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Operational initiative is gained and maintained using the decision making mode. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Instructions are analysed to determine whether they are aligned to the use of force principles.

    Roleplayers are interviewed in order to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the operation.

    Debriefing report is compiled for utilisation in levels of communication and input.

    Possible improvements and lessons are also listed for other commanders to study and use in the preparation for operations.

    Operational administration is completed according to organisational procedures.

    Administration includes attendance registers, log sheets, operational diaries, pocket books, situation report, operational reports.
