PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended to meet the communication requirements for qualifications in Financial Services at NQF Level 6, but it may be useful for learners in other sectors. It requires knowledge of current issues in a field or sub-field and ability to analyse and synthesise information and to conduct independent research into such issues using qualitative and quantitative data to substantiate recommendations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of established theories and principles appropriate to research in a business sector.
  • Investigating a business issue.
  • Analysing data to investigate a business issue.
  • Communicating an argument on a business issue using generally accepted terminology of the field or sub-field. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    The difference between qualitative and quantitative research is explained and a decision is made as to which type of data is appropriate to a proposed research topic. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concept of sampling is explained and an appropriate sample method is selected and substantiated for a proposed research topic. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of a literature survey in researching a topic is explained with reference to gathering secondary data and understanding previous research findings.
