PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner will be able to operate an electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) train air brake system with or without distributed power (DP) supply to facilitate the safe movement on rail in accordance with company specific procedures and operational requirements. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and explain the purpose and function of the brake equipment on locomotive(s) and on wagons fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) train brake system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose and function of the brake equipment on locomotive(s) fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) train brake system is identified and explained in accordance with company specific instructions and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and function of the brake equipment on wagons fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) train brake system is identified and explained in accordance with company specific instructions and manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up, test locomotive(s) fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) brake and distributed power(DP) systems to ensure it operates within the prescribed safety parameters in accordance with company specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Locomotive(s) fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brake or distributed power(DP) systems is/are correctly set up within the prescribed safety parameters in accordance with company specific procedures and manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A diagnostic fault analysis is correctly explained and conducted on electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) brake or distributed power(DP) systems on the locomotive(s) and remedial actions effect to rectify abnormalities in accordance with company specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A diagnostic fault analysis is correctly conducted on electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) brake or distributed power(DP) systems on the wagons utilizing the control equipment on the locomotive (s) and remedial actions effected/explained to rectify sub standard conditions in accordance with company specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to disable the distributed power(DP) system and convert the electronically controlled pneumatic(ECP) brake systems to standard pneumatic brake system for shunting and off loading purposes is displayed in accordance with company specific procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply electronically pneumatic controlled air brake principles (including Distribution of Traction Power) to regulate the acceleration and deceleration of a train. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Apply electronically pneumatic controlled air brake principles (including Distribution of Traction Power) to regulate the acceleration and deceleration of a train in order to apply the topographic and environmental conditions to ensure the effective control of speed in accordance with the prescribed route, running time and/or timetable, company specific instructions, procedures and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ability to utilise the electronically pneumatic controlled air brake system's visual indicators and control panel to maintain the speed of the train in accordance with the prescribed route, running time and/or timetable is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ability to apply road knowledge and electronically pneumatic controlled air brake principles by means of visual and audible indicators in order to safely regulate the speed of the train on varying track conditions is demonstrated in accordance with company specific instructions, procedures and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability to apply the distribution of traction power, train handling and electronically pneumatic controlled air brake principles by means of visual and audible indicators in order to safely regulate the speed of the train on varying track conditions, is demonstrated in accordance with company specific instructions, procedures and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to regulate the speed of an electronically pneumatic controlled air brake a train in order to comply with the topographic environmental conditions to ensure that effective train handling techniques are applied in accordance with company specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ability to effect emergency procedures in the event of an electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brake failure to regulate the safe movement of a train in accordance with company specific instructions is correctly explained and demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Monitor and react to visual and audible indicators on the locomotive to ensure the electronically controlled pneumatic air brake system of the train operates within normal parameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ability to collate, analyse and evaluate information emanating from visual and audible indicators is demonstrated to ensure the train operates within the normal parameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ability to effect remedial actions in the event of an electronically controlled pneumatic air brake system to regulate the safe movement of a train in accordance with company specific instructions, procedures and manufacturer's specifications is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant role players are advised of sub-standard conditions and temporary actions taken to rectify sub-standard conditions in accordance with company specific instructions.

    Assessment mechanisms
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that has been accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered and accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA as prescribed.
