PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to enable security personnel to gather and analyse information regarding potential risks and threats in a defined operational area. They will also be able to provide both timeous and accurate feedback pertaining to threats and risks and identify threats and risks in order to respond to them.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Identifying security risks and threats.
  • Reacting to security risks and threats in a given situation.
  • Providing feedback on risks and threats. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Throughout this unit standard the term: "threats", refers to but is not limited to: theft, armed robbery, unauthorised access, corruption, sabotage, hijacking.

    Information is collated in order to assist with risk and threat identification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Collection of information may include but not limited to: physical observation, briefings, reports, occurrence book entries, pocket book entries, and electronic data.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Risks and threats pertaining to area of responsibility are identified in a given situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Situation can be a real situation or a case study.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of the risks and threats not being dealt with are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Multiple risks or threats are prioritised according to possible harmful influences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Multiple risks or threats are assessed in order to determine next course of action.

    Safety aspects to be taken into account when providing for reacting to risks and threats are explained in a given situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety aspects include the safety of the people and assets in the immediate environment or surroundings. It excludes Occupational Health and Safety issues.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of possible reactions to identified threats and risks are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of possible reactions may include but not limited to: reporting, calling for back-up, confronting, containing, evacuation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of taking inappropriate action are described in a given situation in line with current legislation.

    Provide feedback on risks and threats.

    Reporting processes and procedures are described according to when and how they should be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A security threat and risk report is compiled within the prescribed format.

    Security threat and risk report may include but not limited to verbal, written and electronic communications.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Role players are notified of identified risks and threats in order to inform future actions necessary.

    Future actions must be in accordance with worksite procedures.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
