PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons working in the International trade environment especially within exports. The learner is able to define supplier specifications.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Evaluate current suppliers against the buying specifications.
  • Trace the potential/actual origin of product components.
  • Interpret the market requirements regarding product inputs to supplier specifications.
  • Define the relevant cost implications regarding duties, rebates and draw backs.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner to increasing levels of efficiency and effectiveness in the International trade environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field as well as within other fields. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the International Trade environment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is intended for learners who are engaged in international trade activities and who are required to define supplier specifications. The learner who has acquired this unit standard is generally required to work under minimum supervision. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Evaluate current suppliers against the buying specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of evaluating the buyer's specifications against supplier product is explained as it relates to different export products and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Local and import content is evaluated in terms of availability, reliability, quality, cost and efficiency as it relates to different export products and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Supplier is assessed in accordance with clients' country of origin requirements as stipulated in the contract as it relates to different export products and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The evaluation reports on suppliers are assessed, mandates to negotiate are issued, and the recommendations on potential suppliers are accepted or rejected as it relates to different export products and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Suppliers of goods and services which present the best benefit/risk profile are selected and appointed as preferred suppliers as it relates to different export products and services. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Trace the potential/actual origin of product components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance to trace the potential/actual origin of product components is explained as it relates to company strategy, policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Origins of imported and local components are traced and verified against bill of materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Components of unacceptable origin are identified and withdrawn from product specification according to organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Supplier of components contrary to buyer specifications is withdrawn from preferred supplier list in accordance with company policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Policies and procedures for the reassessment of suppliers and monitoring countries of supply are developed as it relates to different export products and services. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Define the relevant cost implications regarding duties, rebates and drawbacks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance in defining the relevant cost implications regarding duties, rebates and drawbacks is explained as it relates to different export products and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cost implications between locally produced and imported components are compared as it relates to different export products and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tariffs, duties, rebates and drawbacks are explained in relation to importing for export. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The most cost effective option is recommended and selected as it relates to different export products and services. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA).

    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and/or be a subject matter expert in this learning area and have at least three (3) years experience in the skills specific area.

    The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification.
  • Internal moderation.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the relevant ETQA.
