PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to apply relevant technology to operate a feeder mechanism in the glass forming process.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe the construction and functioning of feeder and associated equipment.
  • Describe and apply technology used in the glass forming process.
  • Monitor and maintain normal operating conditions in the feeder mechanism.
  • Collect and interpret information relevant to the feeder mechanism.
  • Assess the impact of process variations on glass forming.
  • Adjust glass feeder mechanism parameters to comply with final product requirements.
  • Implement health, safety, environmental and quality issues and technology relevant to glass forming.

    Make weight adjustments to improve gob form and size. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Adjustments include mass, shape, length, diameter.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The sequence of steps required to make weight adjustments are listed and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate feeder adjustment decisions are taken based on the correct interpretation of collected information. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Collected information is as per operating instructions and as necessitated by process deviations and potential process deviations.

    Safe conditions are established before adjustments are made.

    Suitable adjustments due to weight variations are made in accordance with instructions.

    Make minor shear adjustments in accordance to instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The conditions when shear height adjustments are required are identified in accordance with process instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Shear height adjustments are made in accordance to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Shear height adjustments made are noted and reported in accordance with requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Make plunger adjustments. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Plunger adjustments to be made are height,- stroke,- alignment,- differential- and cam adjustments. Where more than one plunger type is used, competency must be achieved in each of the available types.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The conditions for plunger adjustments and the suitable type of adjustment required is identified in accordance with requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safe conditions are established when making plunger adjustments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Plunger adjustments are made in accordance to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Plunger adjustments made are noted and reported in accordance with requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Replace feeder mechanism equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Feeder mechanism equipment to be replaced includes orifice rings, plungers, shears, tubes and cams and performed at this level under supervision.

    Safety and environmental standards when changing the equipment are maintained at all times.

    The equipment is changed in accordance with operation instructions.
