PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to receiving booking requests for transportation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful goods and they are able to complete the relevant documentation. They are also able to accept and stow and segregate and secure hazardous and harmful cargoes on vessels in the port in accordance with safety procedures and relevant regulatory guidelines.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Receiving booking request for the transportation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes at sea.
  • Completing documentation.
  • Accepting dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes in port.
  • Stowing/segregate and securing dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes on vessel. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

  • This unit standard is intended for learners who are handling dangerous goods in conformity with International Legislation.
  • This unit standard requires the individual to undertake the relevant outcomes actions for the nine identified classes of Dangerous Goods as listed below:

    > Class 1 - explosives.
    > Class 2 - gasses.
    > Class 3 - flammable liquids.
    > Class 4 - flammable solids.
    > Class 5 - oxidizers & peroxides.
    > Class 6 - poisons & etiological substances.
    > Class 7 - radioactive materials.
    > Class 8 - corrosives.
    > Class 9 - miscellaneous dangerous goods/substances.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive booking request for the transportation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes at sea. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Booking request is received and classification is verified according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Vessel suitability and availability is verified according to the booking request and classification of the cargo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cargo is accepted/rejected for shipment based on the classification of the cargo and the suitability and availability of vessel according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Class number on booking request is verified against UN number as stipulated in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    The purpose of the relevant documentation is explained and described as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code and national legislation.

    All documentation is available as required by national legislation and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All relevant documentation relating to the cargo to be transported are received and verified according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code and organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Physical condition of cargo and cargo transport units are checked according to International Maritime Dangerous Goods code and organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose to check the physical condition of the cargo and cargo transport units are explained and described as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Stow/segregate and secure dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes on vessel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The overall planning of the loading/stowage/segregation and securing of cargo is explained and described as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The loading, stowage, segregation and securing of the cargo is verified according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
