PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to plan the proposed stowage and segregation for the transportation of dangerous goods at sea. They will be able to interpret and develop a stowage plan. Learners will also be able to prepare for and handle an emergency that could arise at sea.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Stowing and segregating products in conformity with International Maritime Dangerous Goods code and vessel certificate of compliance for carriage of dangerous goods.
  • Interpreting requirements to develop stowage plan.
  • Developing stowage plan.
  • Preparing for an emergency and contingency plan for carriage of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes by sea.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:

    Stow and segregated products in conformity with International Maritime Dangerous Goods code and vessel certificate of compliance for carriage of dangerous goods.

    The type of transport unit for the transportation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes by sea is identified and described according to international codes and regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stowage and securing methods are explained, described and applied according to international codes and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The type of vessel for the transportation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes by sea is identified and described according to international codes and regulations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Container, tanker, break-bulk, roll-on/roll-off.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The proposed stowage and segregation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes are applied according to international codes and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A certificate of compliance is obtained from relevant regulatory authority as required by international codes and regulations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interpret requirements to develop stowage plan.

    The type of product/ UN number is identified according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The dangerous goods list is used to verify the markings and labels on dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes to be stowed according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The position all other International Marine Organise cargo on the vessel is identified according to international codes and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Temperature control provisions are explained and described as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Sources of heat are identified and described as it relates to the stowage of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Specific stowage and segregation requirements are identified, described and applied according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    General stowage and segregation requirements are explained, described and applied according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    Stowage plans are interpreted and applied as required by International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    Emergency equipment is described and available as required by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    Contingency plans and procedures are described, developed and applied as required by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.
